Samsung Taps Corning's New Gorilla Glass for Galaxy S24 Series

A new Corning glass cover, Gorilla Armor, will likely appear across a wide variety of upcoming devices, making its less reflective and more durable features available to everyone.

At the Galaxy Unpacked event on Wednesday, Samsung revealed that its new Galaxy S24 flagship smartphones will use Corning's new iteration of Gorilla Glass, called Corning Gorilla Armor.

The new smartphone cover material reduces reflection up to 75%, says the company, and increases durability when compared to earlier aluminosilicate material, like what you see on iPhone or earlier Samsung handsets. Plus, Corning created a new lab test with a "Scratch Bot" to test how well the new material handles scratches caused by day-to-day use and wear. The company reported that the new Gorilla Armor is up to four times more scratch-resistant than earlier iterations.

In addition, Corning claims that Gorilla Armor is made with an average of 25% recycled content and has the bona fides from UL Solutions to prove it.

"Gorilla Armor brings Corning's research and engineering prowess together with Samsung's consumer-centric design and focus on user experience," said David Velasquez, vice president and general manager at Corning, in a statement. "This latest innovation simultaneously addresses both the need for durability and our increasing need for better optics – bringing the mobile phone experience of the future into the present."

Corning and Samsung have been collaborating for 50 years, said Samsung, with a partnership in 1973 for televisions. Gorilla Glass has been used by countless smartphones, including those from Apple, Samsung, Sony, OnePlus, and more. Samsung also uses folding Gorilla Glass, Victus, on its Galaxy Z Fold5 and Galaxy Z Flip5.
